Ekiti Muslim Clerics Advocate Creation of Welfare Boards for Faith Groups

Muslim clerics in Ekiti State have called on the government to establish dedicated welfare boards for adherents of both Islam and Christianity, stressing that such institutions would promote fairness, ease engagement with faith-based groups and enhance religious harmony in the state.

The appeal was made at the general meeting of the League of Imams and Alfas, Ekiti State chapter, held on Thursday at the Central Mosque, Oja Oba, Ado-Ekiti.
The gathering, presided over by the President-General of the League of Imams and Alfas for the Southwest, Edo and Delta States, Fadheelat Sheikh Dr. Jamiu Keulere Bello, drew chief imams and clerics from all 16 local government areas of the state.

At the meeting, a three-year transition was formalised as new executive members were selected from across the councils and different Islamic sects to steer the association’s affairs.

In his address, Sheikh Bello charged the new executives to discharge their responsibilities with the fear of God and unwavering commitment to the unity of the Muslim community.
While commending the state government for its support to the Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, he said a more lasting structure would be achieved by creating separate Muslim and Christian Welfare Boards.

According to him, this would not only ease the operations of religious bodies but also aid government in its direct dealings with the faithful.
The clerics also used the occasion to offer prayers for Nigeria and Ekiti State.

In a related development, the Chairman of the Ekiti State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Alhaji Salman Adedipe, lauded Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s administration for what he described as one of the most successful Hajj exercises in recent history.

He urged Muslims in the state to project the government’s efforts positively as a way of deepening mutual trust and cooperation.
The League announced that its next meeting will be held at the Central Mosque in Kota, Ekiti East Local Government, on October 30, 2025.
